Dr. Shrihari Karve is a gold medallist eye surgeon having practice in Thane since 2010. He comes from a family of doctors. His father, Dr Jayant Karve is a paediatrician practicing at Karve hospital since the past 40 years. His mother late Dr. Prabha Karve was a general practitioner for 35 years.
Dr. Shrihari Karve passed his M.B.B.S examination under the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in the year 2002. He was Topper in his class with Distinction in Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, ENT and Ophthalmology. He was the University Topper in Microbiology and Ophthalmology.
He did his one year internship programme at Rajawadi hospital (Ghatkopar) and Bhabha Hospital (Kurla). He Passed the Membership Examination of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mumbai in 2003 in first attempt. In the same year he passed the DNB Primary (eligibility) examination in his first attempt.
He was admitted to the National Institute of Ophthalmology, Pune for his 3 year Post-Graduation in Ophthalmology under Dr. Shrikant Kelkar. He passed his D.O.M.S examination in 2006 as a Gold medallist with highest marks in the state. For this he was awarded the prestigious Dr Dastoor prize.
He has passed the International Council of Ophthalmology Examinations, (Basic & Clinical) both in his First attempt. These international examinations are conducted by the International Council of Ophthalmology to ensure global best practises and uniform level of knowledge all over the world.
Dr. Karve passed the D.N.B final examination held in New Delhi in 2007 in his first attempt. This is a national level examination for post-graduates and has strict passing criteria. The certificates of this examination are handed to the doctors by the Hon’ President of India.
Following this, he attended training programme for eye doctors at Shankar Nethralaya, Chennai in 2007. In 2008, he pursued his 2 year Fellowship programme (Super-Specialization) for Phacoemulsification (Cataract surgery) at Ahmedabad at the prestigious Iladevi Cataract & IOL research Centre. Trained under Dr Abhay Vasavada, who has been awarded the most prestigious award in Ophthalmology worldwide, The Binkhorst Medal by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery in 2011. Your doctor has been trained in this internationally reputed institute where colleague doctors from Greece, Belgium, Venezuela, etc were also being trained.
In 2009, Dr. Shrihari J. Karve was selected to participate in one of the largest eye camp in the world. The camp was organised in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, where several patients were operated daily for cataract, totalling to thousands of cataract surgeries in 15 days.
He is associated with the Indian Red Cross society and has undertaken numerous eye surgeries for the underprivileged in a small village in Gujarat, named Dholka. He continues to participate in eye camps conducted by Red Cross society, Thane.
Dr. Karve has been associated with several research activities, with special focus on cataract and its management. His research topic for dissertation was ‘Clinical Comparison of Ocular Complications and Visual Outcome of Small incision manual cataract surgery and Phacoemulsification’, a comparison between older and newer techniques of cataract surgery.
He has authored several original articles in peer reviewed journals like Indian Journal of Ohthalmology and also in international journals like the prestigious JCRS (Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery). The topics of the research range from cataract in children, rollable lenses, UBM (ultrasound) analysis of sulcus-fixated lenses.
Dr. Karve has made presentations in several Eye Care conferences where the topics of presentations included ‘Use of Moxifloxacin as prophylaxis in cataract surgery’, ‘Clinical Outcomes of Toric lenses’, ‘Comparison of machines used to evaluate glaucoma’, ‘Light-adjustable lenses’, ‘Comparison of contrast sensitivity’, etc
Dr. Shrihari J. Karve is a life member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS).
